So you wanna be free…

Shout out to all those Freelancers out there! Hands high for all those tax filing, notary signing, time tracking, invoice creating, contract sending folks! We see you and we know you.

With over ten years of first-hand experience, our team wants to give you the top ten things any creative/artistic freelancer should have locked down for a sustainable career.

  1. Decided on a brand, a company name, something that sounds like “yeah, I’d give them money”.

  2. Articulate your “why”. Why are you doing this business or service? Why are you prepared? Why should I pay you? Why do you know just enough about this? Why are you doing this now? Why does doing this one thing change your life?

  3. File the DBA (doing business as) paperwork with the appropriate county.

  4. Purchase the correct software to invoice (ask for monies), contract (legally bind your work for monies), and accept payment. [recommendations: HelloBonsai]

  5. Define your scope and/or products. Don’t do everything, for all people.

  6. Let people find you - website, landing page, socials.

  7. Create a business email address [recommendations: Google Workspace]

  8. Get headshots and business cards [recommendations: Moo]

  9. Offer something for free

  10. Network & Partner

FREE ADVICE: Do all these things before getting a credit card, business loan, hiring anyone, or renting/buying physical space or physical products.
